Gujarat Vs MP

Boarded a bus at 8pm, had a terrible sleep, thanks to the free bumpy rides offered by the govt. of MP, then I suddenly felt a change early in the morning. No more bumpy rides, well yes, I had entered the land of entrepreneurs, gujarat.
Hailing from a rather blessed-with-unknown-politicians state of MP, I was rather surprised with the amount of contribution government can make towards a state's development. Having been in tamilnadu, where infrastructure has been blessed due to the strategic political support to central governments, I knew MP governments could have done better. But gujarat presents an amazing example, of what a determined government effort can do. Be it the case of roads, attracting foreign investments in industries, organizing Vibrant summits or controlling crime rate, gujarat sets a case to look up for every government. The fact that even girls can roam around freely at 2a.m. without any fear itself projects an image of gujarat as a desirable place to stay in.
On the other side, you have MP, where the commercial capital indore, itself struggles to attracts industries. Inspite of having the potential and advantage of being a strategic location for any company (centre of country!) it represents a poor political will to take stronger steps forward in that direction.
The biggest irony is that both are being governed by BJP, when the central government is of the opposition (in case if MP govt was looking for that excuse!)

review : Jaane tu.. ya jaane na

Quite an unconventional start, with a glimpse of normal love story in between and the typical bollywood-stylish end is what i will say about the movie.
Watching genelia in 'bomerillu'(telugu flick) and knowing the fact that Aamir Khan is the producer of this movie were enough reasons for me to watch this movie. And infact when you hear someone saying that this movie is worth watching 2-3 times then you seriously feel like giving it a try.
The movie starts quite well, with some good humour (remember? 'pappu can't dance') and goes on well until aditi(genelia) and jai(imran) realise that they don't love each other, and are just best friends. And then starts their search for soulmates, obvious twist in the tale. And infact they do find themselves new partners, but you can guess, how this has to end.
Regarding guest appearance of Arbaaz and sohail khan, guys please! for gods sake don't spoil a good-going movie. In some scenes they are okay but by the end, they go crazy and you'll seriously feel irritated. Riding those horses on the roads of mumbai, hats off!
Basically, the story is all the same, that of a usual indian romantic movie. But the way of presentation is quite a bit different, except specially the end, where those 'teen shartein' are fulfilled by the protagonist, however silly they maybe.
The good part is that the actors and his friends are not those only-found-in-indian-movie types, they are simple characters which we come across in everyday lives.
Imran khan seems to have learnt a lot from his uncle aamir, and for sure is a promising actor, the only one after neil nitin mukesh(from Johnny gaddar) I guess.. (of course regardless of who gets the best debutant award at the IIFA awards!). Genelia is one of those few actress who can do those bubbly roles(just like she did in 'bomerillu') with ease, just like preity zinta :).
Overall, the movie is okay. And I'll give it a 3.5 star. Go watch it if you are looking for a little change and yea, its a feel-good movie, so you'll come out in a good mood, which is not generally the case nowadays with hindi movies.

Sometime back I had written about the 'state-quota in NITs'. Thanks to the media, for when it was published in JAM, it did get some notice and brought me some appraisal :). But it feels great when something that you bring into the light, gets noticed and some step is taken towards it by the government. Well, I agree it won't have been just my article in JAM bringing this revolution, but I guess there's nothing wrong in claiming for your piece of cake, if you deserve some. :D

According to the corrigendum issued by the
Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, for filling up seats in NITs
amongst the candidates declared eligible for counseling, on the basis of results of
AIEEE conducted by CBSE, the seats in the NITs shall be filled up with following
criteria:
(i) 50% of the seats in an NIT shall be filled by the eligible candidates who
have passed +2 examination from the State in which the NIT is situated. For
example, in NIT Agartala 50% seats shall be filled by the eligible
candidates who have passed their +2 examination from Tripura.
(ii) Admission in NITs for rest 50% seats would be on All India Merit basis.
For these seats candidates would be admitted from amongst All India rank
holders in AIEEE.

Although this may be a little disheartening for those guys, who still don't have NIT in their state.
But its a good news for all those crying over not getting the dream college even after excelling in AIEEE. Still 50% is to be filled by the home-state candidates, but atleast the rest 50% will be filled on purely impartial way.
Although I was shocked to hear about this news considering the fact that our HRD minister is still the one who has the credit of bringing some 'historical' changes in the admission process in India, bringing in 'quotas' and arousing people to destroy railway lines in rajasthan to get the officially coveted status of 'backward class'.
But, after this rule coming into action from this year onwards (those taking admission in july'08) ,I think the better crowd these NITs get, better is going to be their reputation. And I guess the 50% home-state quota too is on its way to make way for 100% admission on All India Merit basis. Just keep your fingers crossed, because the HRD minister is still the same!

JAM's Engineering admissions - book review

One of the most confusing times of my life was while taking admission to engineering college, whether to take computer science in NIT calicut or Ceramic Engg. dual in IT BHU or mechanical engineering in NIT trichy was the question that haunted me the most and I think it did almost everyone appearing for AIEEE councelling, and thanks to India Today and other magazines for publishing those annual rankings which are almost always disagreed with, expect ofcourse by the colleges getting better rank than what they deserve like VIT (vellore institute of Technology) getting a rank above the so called much better institutes of our country this year, which always adds up to the dilemma for the students. But finally, something is there to bring relief to all the engineering aspirants and the problems they face while taking admissions.
My first, cynical as usual, expression on hearing about this book was, 'what? another rank list?' and that too by taking feedback from the students themselves. Well, tell me, who will speak bad about his college? (atleast after he knows that his college's reputation is associated with his). But being proved wrong is what happens for good sometimes.
The better part of 'Engineering admissions' is the insight that you get about engineering and life at various colleges rather than just giving a rank list. Many of those already engineers still don't know the difference in Computer science and IT.
Anyways, there are still certain glitches in the book, like

1. The book doesn't cover architecture. Well, considering the fact that most of those who take admission to architecture(B.Arch.) are the ones who prepared for engg. entrance exams, if not much then this is true atleast for those doing architecture at IITs or NITs. So, excluding it is a bad idea.

2. Although most of the rankings are what is generally accepted, but there are some loopholes. As in I was shocked to see PEC, thapar and SGSITS(indore) being given A+(euivalent to IIT roorkee!). I agree they are good colleges but disagree with them being given status better than NIT calicut or equivalent to IIIT hyderabad and BITS pilani. Talking about SGSITS in particular, most of students are placed in bulks like TCS, infy and wipro. The number of companies visiting the campus being around 30 -40. If you talk about NIT calicut(which is given 'A') itself the companies visiting the campus is much more than that. And the no. of companies visiting NIT trichy, IIIT Hyd ('A+') is a lot more than that.

3. And yea, sorry to sound cynical but there are more than a few spelling mistakes in the book.

4. Lastly, the biggest setback for the book is its price, I mean if I were the engineering aspirant looking out for some guidance on selecting the right college, I would have preferred taking advice from my coaching teacher available free of cost (which I actually did thanx to the lack any other resources at that time) rather than buy a book worth Rs. 400! Well, its a little too much for a student in 12th standard. It could have got more buyers, had it been priced at around Rs. 200.

Compiling all those articles published in JAM over the years, like 'unofficial prospectus' of various colleges, is a good business idea by JAM's editor. But still the book is as important for an IIT aspirant as it is for the one taking admission to a local engg. college. Dedicating a whole section to IITs is impressive. Moreover considering the fact that the editor doesn't have an engineering background the work is quite good. Articles giving description of various branches are enlightening. A must guide for all the engineering aspirants, I would say.

what are we waiting for?

one of the things you would have surely come across being in india is, how people break the traffic signals/rules. Infact we all have been a part of it sometime or the other. And when it comes to us we say, 'chalta hai yaar, everybody is doing it so why shouldn't I?'
But one more quality of Indians is that they are good followers(yea!). Somewhere in their heart they know, they are doing the wrong thing, but what they need is someone else to show them the way and that too with an example.
If you don't believe me, just do one thing, go to any traffic signal where no one is following it (ofcourse it means, no traffic policeman would be there!) and you stop if the signal is 'red' , for it to go 'green'. And believe me atleast 50% of the ppl would follow you and wait for the signal to go green, who otherwise would have surely broken the rules. And they will definitely follow it atleast for next two signals. You may not have brought a big change but this small change can definitely bring about a big chain reaction.
Many would argue that whats wrong in breaking a signal? As they are expert enough at driving to avoid any accidents, but dude! its not about you. I know you are a good driver, but not everyone is, atleast not all those who will follow you in breaking the signal. So maybe you avoid an accident but wats the gurantee of that person who followed you?
I see people who would give an excuse for the above thing as, the absence of traffic policeman is government's fault.
I accept it is, but isn't it atleast near to enough on their part to atleast put up the traffic signal?
The thing is that, we too are the citizens of the same country, so isn't it our responsibility to follow the rules made for our own benefit?
can't we change this country by taking an initiative ourselves? rather than blaming those in power?
P.S. - I read somewhere that Indians are generally scared of opting for entrepreneurship. I think I 've got the basic reason, its in their blood. Their inability to take initiative!

blogging workshop @ NITT

Blogging is something that is catching up slowly in India. We are not still much into this phenomenon, for I keep facing such questions from my friends as ‘ye kis chidiya ka naam hai?(which bird’s name is this?) and then as usual I try explaining them, showing my technical(or say internetechnical) superiority over them. (as being an engineer, you are supposed to know all these things happening on the internet).

I had heard about rashmi’s blogging workshop in IIIT hyd and IIT kgp and the feedback from IIIT was good. So this was one thing I thought we must have in our campus too, and what better the occasion than in Infotainment section of our department’s technical symposium. And I knew enough bloggers in campus to make sure, that response will be good.

But unfortunately, rashmi bansal was unable to impress the audience as much as one gets after reading her blog or JAM! For the simple reason that the audience didn’t turn out the way she had expected. While in IIIT the audience was around 80% already bloggers and 20% wannabe enthusiasts. The ratio turned out just opposite over here. And not knowing much about blogging, you certainly don’t enjoy watching others go to stage and display their blog and get personal feedbacks.

Although I don’t think of it as a fault on rashmi’s part too, but I certainly think that if you are going to conduct a workshop which is not yet common, its better to be prepared to face audience who expect you to start from the 'ABC' of the phenomenon.

Anyways, I and others who are already into blogging, did get something out of the workshop but by the overall response of the audience, I think it would have been better if we had asked rashmi for a lecture on ‘entrepreneurship’ instead!

pragyan '08

Pragyan, the international techno- management festival of NIT Trichy, as they call it, which aims at imbibing a scientific temper with the spirit of innovation among the youth, truly lived up to its expectations, in its fourth edition. It not only provided a platform to the students to make innovative working models using their engineering skills or to make a profitable Business plan, but also gave them a chance to compete against the best geeks in coding to f1 car making!

What made this pragyan special was not just the participation from across the country, which even turned global in many events, but the strong desire of organizers to deliver the participants, ‘the best’. From 3D movie shows to guest lectures on breathtaking topics like ‘time travel’, from the so-called humanoid robots performing dance on ‘dhoom’ song to the workshop on investment management, it was where everybody found something, which they had always wished they could!

Day 1 – After witnessing one of the biggest contraptions ever at the inauguration ceremony, junta pulled up all their seat belts, to be a part of this classic journey for the next 3 days. The morning crowd puller was the robotic workshop by Mr. Amir Shapiro, where he shared various invaluable fundas with the robotic enthusiasts. It was the day where all the participants made their best attempts to clear the prelims of different events and reach the finals. The results brought smiles on the face of some alongwith the awareness of tough challenge lying ahead in finals! And glimpse of sadness on the faces of those who could not clear the prelims. But as someone has rightly said, ‘success is never ending and failure is not an option’, these high spirits pulled up their sleeves for rest of the events, to give their best shot next time.

Day 2 – After gaining momentum in its very first day, pragyan still had a lot more to unveil and this was proved on the 2^nd day, when the participation in the next round of events touched new heights. Starting off with Ventura, one of the biggest Bplan competitions of India, which had more than 4 million INR at stake, the day saw engineering enthusiasts building bowling machines with simple materials and mind-boggling creativity! The day ended with an admirable alumnus of college enlightening the future engineers about the importance of renewable energy and entrepreneurial aspects it offers.

Day 3 – where there is a beginning there is an end, but at pragyan they seem to believe not in the end but in continuous improvement. With a promise to come back next year, better than ever, this year’s pragyan came to an end. The day witnessed the final results of various events, eminent guest lectures including the one by mr. subramania swamy on indian economy, jagriti- the ‘contribution to society’ aspect of pragyan and pengufest- the linux workshop.

Nostalgic it was for all those who had witnessed previous editions of pragyan and an unforgettable experience for others.

p.s. – The things that I liked the most, as NOT mentioned above, included food stalls and few temporary maals (or hot-chicks, as they are called) in the campus. Special thanks to www.findnearyou.com team, for giving me a pen drive for writing this blog :)

hanuman returns

Thanks to those responsible for power-cut at our hostel last night (which ofcourse is not a new thing for us Indians), which compelled us to watch this movie for having nothing else better to do (for those using scratching their heads on how we watched it when the power was not there, we watched it on the laptop!).

Surprisingly, the movie turned out to be really good. It not only reminds you of your childhood, but also makes you aware of the difference in the kid’s understanding at your time and now.

What makes it appealing is its relevance with the today’s world. This is what in my opinion gives it an edge over other such movies. Rather than just portraying those mythological stories on screen, the creators have made the movie fully based on the present scenario. From the I-phone’s touch ‘zoom in’ option which hanuman uses, to brahma’s laptop carrying assistant, the movie has everything that you can relate to the normal life. The best thing is the usage of language, unlike the normal ‘shudh hindi’ types used in such mythological movies which rather go above the heads of kids, they did not mind using the frequently used hinglish words.

Featuring the voices of SRK to gabbar to big B to mogambo, the movie doesn’t just makes you feel relaxed, but also has some important teachings for kids.

The sholay spoofs and other general bollywood spoofs prove that its not only aimed at kids, as they won’t understand them.

Although the animation quality can never match up to those in Hollywood but it is acceptable. And also, last part of the movie is a bit dull. But overall , the movie is a good watch, even if you are not a kid, as apart from entertaining it also imparts some good messages through the best way possible, relating it to god. And for those parents out there, I think this is possibly what you were waiting for to show your kids, once they get some time off, rhyming on the tunes of today’s sex and masala video songs/ movies.

Movie deserves a decent 3.5 out of 5.

wat a happy new year !

what a pleasant start to a new year...? There are loads of forwarded scraps in ur scrapbook and all of them have two lines in common... "HAPPY NEW YEAR" & "CLICK HERE TO SEND SCRAP TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS AT ONCE".
It actually started somedays back. I got a scrap wishing me a HAPPY BIRTHDAY ! frm one of my frends.. and i was shocked to see that.
for a moment i just kept staring at the screen... confused about wht to reply? is it that i forgot my own bday?! or is he wishing me in advance, 4 months before my bday or he's wishing me a belated happy bday after 8 months ! but no it wasn't just me .. he wished happy bday to all his frends !
no no ! the guy is in proper mental condition and has no records of any mental problem as per my knowledge ! But his only mistake was that he clicked on that link saying "send scraps to all your frends at once" and this was the only thing he could think of to send :-D !
i don't understand one thing, wat impression does the other person gets whn he looks at such a scrap, which u 've sent to ur entire friend list. And you might not have thought of this person even once while sending. Then wats the sense?
just tell me, do u ever reply to such msgs?
well, i don't know how long will it take for people to realise that its better to spend some time and send personal scraps to 5 friends instead of just clicking on that sick link and sending it to some 500, with no meaning at all !
but atleast i don't want to see some amateur orkut user sending a scrap saying "MAY YOUR SOUL REST IN PEACE !" with that link as bottomline, in my scrapbook some other day !
P.S. - Happy New Year! to those two guys who forwarded the same scrap to their entire friend list including me while i was writing this ! cheers !

It happens only in India !

uncle main pichle do hafte mein char baar aa chuka hoon, aap har baar bolte hain ki aaj ho jayega?
lekin aaj tak mere ghar ka electricity meter change karne koi nahi aaya !
"Achcha ! ho jayega beta, main aaj hi karwata hoon.", that middle aged fellow (raavan ki nalayak aaulad !!), says in a very sweet voice. But no, this time I'm not gonna go unless and until he sends someone with me rightaway to get it done.
This is india. If you want to get your domestic electricity meter changed because its not working(i.e. reading is constant), you are the one who has to take the pains to get it done !
No, I'm not that interested in paying more money to electricity board but they will loot me by giving big bills if I don't go and tell them that the electricity meter is not working.
Their meter readers don't notice it when they come to take readings. And if you go tell them about why did you get so much charge in the bill? They have simple answer, sir, your meter is not working, so we have given your bill based on past averages (which seems like the average of squares of bill amounts!).
The first time you go there, they ask you to submit a xerox of your bill for address (oh great! I'm a subscriber and they don't even know my address!). The second time, they actually misplace it 'by mistake', so you give them one more xerox. And still there is no result !
But then finally I go and talk to my neighbour who also works in elec. board, but at a different sub station. And now I actually understand the real reason, when he tells that they take some 200 rs. or more for getting this thing done. so he suggests me, you try to get it done tomm. this way or else give me the money and I'll get the work done(no, atleast I've that much trust on him that he's not gonna eat my money).
So, I went again and gave my last chance on getting work done in a government office of India, without giving bribe. And whoa !!
hard work always pays...!!
I guess that officer(or I must call him just a govt. employee) was finally guilty when I went there for three consecutive days and he then ordered his subordinate to go with me and change the meter immediately.
I just guess, what was wrong in sending him two weeks before itself on my first complaint !
That would atleast have increased my respect for the electricity board.
"positive thinking" - yea, there is still some hope to get your work done in government offices without giving bribe, provided you are prepared to work hard for it! (Its a pity that many of us choose the previous one just for the sake of little comfort.)
Just realised that I'm writing this post on the eve of Gandhi jayanti !

tiger is free but is the dragon?

So much has been hyped about the India and China's race to the top. There are so many surveys and researches being done to find out that little difference which proves who is going to win. But tell me one thing is this economic growth the only factor we must compare the two countries to decide which is better?
As most of the researches have shown that, growing like as they are in present, china will overtake US to bag the first position and India the second. But hey!!
I don't bother about that. Tell me what is the sense of being rich and prosperous but still not having the freedom to express yourself?
No I’m not talking about Airtel! But what I’m pointing to is the difference in the governments. While India enjoys the democracy with complete freedom for all its citizens as long as they don't try to misuse it. Chinese are bound by their own government in the way that they can't even say anything against their government or wrong about their culture. The government has blocked websites (even Google search has a lot of restrictions); anything that is against government is immediately prohibited.
And come to India you say whatever; even if it’s against government you always enjoy the support of the opposition. It’s a pity that some political groups use this freedom in the worst way.
I'm proud of the freedom that I have over a Chinese who's richer than me, what’s life when you can't even say openly about your own country !
I just guess what would have happened to M.F. hussain if he was born in China ?!

so many maals in NITT campus... omg..!! help me !!
i guess this is one thing which seriously made festember worth a FEST to remEMBER.. hehehe.. ;-)
its time when i've seen more gals than cows in our campus...
this edition of festember ... as expected, was truly remarkable. May it be Radio Jockeying or pottery or theatre workshop or the pronite by KK.. everything jus made it better. On the top of that all was food.. CCD stall in the our campus... though they dont have it in trichy, having it in festember I'm sure those CCD guys must have made big money out of it.
And yea how can i forget doing catwalk like a gal on the airtel informals stage. Its a different matter that the guy said that i turned it a lil vulgar... well now dont ask me what women ramp walk is all about... ! :-D
Informals kept janta busy throughout the day and now i guess no one is gonna yell out that festember's chaat. And those who went home thinking that have missed some great moments of their college life. Who's gonna have this all after college?
This is one of those times i feel like ... yea, there MANY other things apart from placements that make this college better than others.
But there's only one thing that i'm afraid about now, how many of these engineering students will actually take up engineering as their career?
I see more painters, dancers, musicians, actors and writers here than technologists!

festember'07

September is here again and so is the annual cult fest of NIT trichy. Festember is one of the biggest cult fest of south India and this year its going to be just better. With a pronite by Kaykay and semi pro Rock contest the fest already seems attractive, but for all those who ever wished if they too could try their hands on RJ-ing.. the workshop on Radio Jockeying is like a dream come true. Apart from this there are workshops on origami, caricature, theatre etc. and loads of lits and cult events.
20-23 september is the time when its all gonna happen... So just be there and enjoy... read the offical blog and check the festember website for more details.

are you also sick of editing your photos , either in picasa or photoshop or some other photo editing software.. ? which takes too much time and is always confusing, like which effect is better, contrast, brightness... etc.
Well, then try this website improveimages.com . Its really nice..
all you've to do is just upload your photo and it will take care of the rest. It will make your photo look much better.. putting in some effects.. and adjusting lightning conditions and all.. you dont have to worry about all that..
the best part is that you dont need to download any software or something..
you can do it just online... with a single click...!!
ofcourse there is an option in picasa to adjust all these things automatically , but personally, i was never satisfied with what it did.. it instead spoiled most of my pics...
So, i think this one is worth a try...

my new spects (or gogs..?)

while everyone around is commenting on my new spects... some saying that its cool... some say r they gogs???
some say its funky!, others say... man, i think ur previous ones were better... and the rest say its jus not the right place to wear them...
the best one was by my cousin.... who said.. bhaiya u look like Mr. Bean in this spects... !!!

Even my professor said - so, bhuvan gupta... wat happened to ur spects?? oh... u got new ? yes sir, i said...
humm.... they look pretty different with those black stripes on white... he said giving weird reaction... like still confused if they r spects or gogs??
i was just about to say... "sir, its fashion.." but thought its better i dont mention it.. and somehow stopped myself...
Finally i'm all confused about how do they look on me....
but one thing is sure.. that i'm in no mood to change them at least for this semester....
so better i should jus take these comments to help me take something better than this next time...
but the more important thing is nobody asks me why did i take them...
so here i'm to Xpress myself... :-)
wat i would like to say is...
that this..!! yea these spects are the ones purely my choice...
i went to the shop alone.. found some gr8 spects... shopkeeper said.. take this one red n black... its In Fashion.... I said no this is wat everyone is wearing so i'll better go for this black and white one... first of all they look very different.. yea.. ofcourse i accept they're a bit funky... but the reason i bought them is they get the attention... :-D
never did i get so many comments on anything i wear or anything about me...
so i'm just happy that atleast they made me noticable... :-D

Thank god.. that obc quota is put on hold at least for one yr... a relief to all the talented aspirants of IITs , IIMs , and other govt. colleges..
but while everyone is concerned abt quota based on classes...
i want to highlight some other important quotas in some of the top institutes of our country...
as most of you might be knowing about AIEEE, all India engg. entrance exam... for admission to National institutes of Technology( NITs) and other deemed universities..
well i'm not here to comment abt that exam.. sure its a very good and reputed exam..
but what i'm trying to focus here is on the admission process that is followed after the exam..
Anyways before that i must tell u about the results of the exam ... every selected candidate is given an all - India rank(AIR) and a state rank... (ur standing in ur state)
while the private colleges and institutes like IIITs (including hyderabad, allahabad etc.) give admission on the all India rank basis...
All the NITs give admission on the basis of state ranks (SR)...
well... u may ask, so wats the big deal..
but there is a problem..
actually in these NITs there is a quota for every state like particular no. of seats in specific branch for a particular state..
50% of the total seats are reserved for the state in which that NIT is located and rest 50% is divided among rest of the states..
and here comes the difference... while a student in andhra pradesh of an AIR under 100 will have an SR of around 40 or more... and rajasthan just close to that...
a candidate from other state may have a SR under 10 at the same AIR !! (if u still can't get my point ... don't worry... continue reading..)
And the bigger problem is as ofcourse all the NITs are not of equal status ,some are of course much better than others and which aspirant would like to join...
but because of this state quota system .. he may not be able to..
to show you an example..
if u look at the statistics of yr. 2006..
the opening and closing rank for Andhra Pradesh for comp. sci. engg. in NIT trichy was AIR - 127... (only one seat for AP in comp. sci. engg.)
for delhi it was AIR - 2235...
for Tamilnadu (the state where NIT trichy is located) had an opening rank of AIR 1406 and closing rank of "AIR 7721" !!!

now just tell me how fair is that to give admission to a student in TN at an AIR of 7000+ and NOT to a student at the same AIR from other state...!!!

while he perfectly deserves admission in a better college (which may not be located in his state)... because he performed better in the AIEEE....
his only mistake is that he did his 12th from (or he is born in) AP or rajasthan or some other state and he has to pay for it!!

even if u support caste based quota ... then i must tell u that this is the trend in the same category (general)... the only difference is state...!!

The trend is following since these colleges had the REC (regional engg. college) status...
what i think is while converting RECs to NITs Mr. Murali manohar joshi (ex-HRD minister) might have thought of changing this state quota system in near future as his next step towards making admission process to engineering colleges easy for aspiring students...
but the present scenario is not at all going that way..
with the changed govt. and our very GREAT Mr. Arjun Singh... i have no hope to see any correction in this procedure...

i just wish if i had the right to vote for HRD minister... but unfortunately he's not from my constituency...!

getting 2828 all india rank in AIEEE was nice a achievement for me....
but the bigger problem was next...
wch college and branch to choose... ?? which of them can i get at this rank and which of them would be best for me..??
If u ask any senior "wch college n branch shud i take?" .... U are most likely to get the reply ... dude.. look, it totally depends on wht u r interested in ...
well thats very true... but man.. a guy at this stage doesnt exactly know about wht he is intrested in..(atleast i dint) the most he can be sure about is wch subject he is intrested in ... phy. or chem. or maths... but not specifically... elecronics, electrical, mechanical, civil or metallurgy...
even if u are sure about ur branch of interest.. u still are confused about college..
i remember my case... when i called up my coaching sir from the councelling hall for which branch and college is better than which one.....
If u look at the magazine ratings... they vary largely from india today to dataquest...
(i was shocked to see BITS ranchi placed above some IITs and BITS pilani out of the top ten in rankings of year 2005)
None of them being reliable enough...
Now this JAM magazine editor is doing a survey of all the engg. colleges... with the help of feedback given by students themselves....
which i hope will come up with some, infact a big help to those bright minds... and save them frm losing wht they deserve just becoz of some "commercial" magazine rankings and lack of proper information...

The Most recent was when i got an sms saying some final year of our college needs this blood group... the msg had tel. no. of hospital in which it claimed, he was admitted... i got it and as it sounded sensible i fwded it to all mah frends... then there were calls coming to me from students having the same blood group... they told me there was no one in that hospital ... they had called up thr...
so they were inquiring me... so i thought of a good way to get to that person.. i passed the contact no. of guy who had this blood group and wanted to donate blood back to whr i got the msg from.. so that msg could trace back to whr it all started... But the next day i found... it was all crap ... no final yr. student of our college was admitted...
Isnt that disgusting.. ppl jus make some crap msg for fun... and they dont even think of the troubles others might have..

Not just this... i also get this daily dose of all frends from orkut sending me some JHOOS invitation.. or somebody "TAGGING" me.... i havent clicked on any of them yet.. .but dear frends if u also receive any msg like dat frm me.. then understand that the website was able to fool me and get my orkut friend list ... and then carry on their dirty ways of publicity...

PPL pls use ur brains before fwding any msg like that... otherwise that 2yr. old girl suffering from some terrible cancer... its been a long time since i posted and now i cant wait anymore... although i've cycle tests frm tommorrow..

but cant stop myself now.. i've so much to tell ...
The last month has really been a tough time for me.. apart from getting hospitalised for the first time... there were lots of things i din even knew could happen... but its life.. and surprises is all wht it brings.. sometimes good, sometimes challenging..
but after all this one thing i will suggest you all is for gods sake dont eat too much of "outside food" .. chaahe wo indore ki chaat hi kyo na ho... or else u too may get jaundice..
after last sem. xams in nov. i've been away frm net almost like mallika sherawat from getting Oscar for "Acting"... lol..
sem. holidays although were fine... wid me learning a bit of dance.. [:D]... and the instructor probably deciding to quit his job... [;)]..
everything was okay... except welcome ceremony by college with this damn cycle test...
but yea one good news is i got a digicam gifted by dad... [:)].. thanks to him..
but now i think it wasnt even as bad resting at home... as this cycle tests r gonna be...
ok.. fine .. its too much for the day b4 CTs and now its better i must go n study...

Only the end is good... i will say..
humm.... although the music had already said that this flick is not gonna be something as a sequel like of munnabhai...
the songs seeming no how creative wid songs like my name is ali , seeming like , wrapping "dilbara" in a different pack...
but still, movies like this attract youngsters like anything... especially whn u've got such a cool starcast and one of the very best production houses in industry...
The movie starts simply reminding you of everything you saw in dhoom - 1 ... and then for the first half story runs simply like for no significance...
except that intelligence in hritik's role... but man... i think we need something more creative...
if something is sold (dhoom) then y r they tryin to make more profit on that name again .....
The first half is basically made of songs n dances... this is the biggest advantage they've taken by replacing john by hritik .... if u talk of dancing .... no ones better than hritik in this industry... i feel... and movie seems to say that only..
i still cudnt understand the need for bips in double role!!
whr both seem to be jus simply like gap filllers... in a so called story...
first role is even okay... but second one.... mindless effort to put sexy things in the movie... and is still somewht annoying...
they could have looked for much better way to do so...
and our uday chopra... the guy giving PJs throughout the movie... goodness... i dont wanna open my mouth...
he is a clear example of how can you survive as an actor... without actually doing it... on the basis of ur family background...
But most remarkable thing about the movie was Ash's role... she seems no less than a hollywood actress now...
she has proved that she is no less than others...
but her role seems alll around to remind u of tomb raider...
But yea... The Very important fact that i think most of the ppl in theatre missed was that...
the very second dialouges that ash speaks is that " ohh.. F**k " .... !!!
bullshit... seems like a daring gal humm... ;)
And yup... abhishek bachchan.. well nothing positive or negative bout this guy.... he has done justice to his role....
And not but the most important character .... Aryan (hritik) .... kudos to him... its only him... who has survived the reputation of yash chopra... He simply Rocks...
i will give the movie a 2.5 star on a scale of 5... Bollywood needs to learn to make better sequels like munnabhai.... (this one is not up that mark)... I expected far better stuff from yash chopra production house...
anyways... if you havent watched the movie and still going to watch it then do not miss the end title song... ( another good dance)....
i was surprised to see ppl leaving theatre without watching the "main ingredient" of the movie...

"yaar aaj mujhe 'baghban' movie (and many other typical bollywood sentis) dekh ke rona aa gaya" and i was like... totally surprised as if he said something absolutely unbelievable... bcuz i never felt like crying while watching any movie..!! .... yea.. but they replaced the work of sleeping pills sumtimes... :-D

i used to think that yea.. im emotionally intellligent... (if not mentally atleast :-D )...
but after getting these feed backs.. i m really surprised...
aur jahan tak rahi ghar ki yaad aane ki baat... yaar hostel mein itne saare doston ke beeech rehke koi kaise akela mehsus kar sakta hai ... hmmm....

time - 2 a.m. , my usual time to blog...
waise to samajh nahi aa raha kya likhu... but kuch nahi se kuch sahi... thodi bakar hi ho jaaye... :-D

Shopping to kal karr hi li thi..
bass room ki safaai baaki thi... (the most annoying work...:-(...)... waise we guys, i mean me, gp and nikunj did it somedays back only... ofcourse it maybe one month or lil more than that...
but c'mon dude... now dont tell me it isnt too soon...
anyways.. whn i woke up at 10.3o in morn... as usual nik. was not in d room.. (i always wonder how this idiot wakes up before me... )... and yea.. there he was.. mah "GOOD" friend, gp.. as always.. still sleeping.. :-D... making me feel that im not the last guy on earth to wake up so late this mornin..
But it was d Diwali mornin..!! and i thought i must wake up b4 its too late...
The scene outside was awesome... So MANY guys taking bath this morning... (after using the same undergarments for weeks...!!... now, isnt that sick...!!)...
so main socha ki mujhe bhi nahaa hi lena chahiye.. (hey...!!! but i had bath two days back only... :-D)... aur balti leke bathroom ki taraf jaa hi raha tha ki gp bola ruk jaa.. abhi safaai karni hai.. baad mein nahana... :-D... now wht could be better than this... ;-)...
so we first went to mess to take our lunch.. and whoa!!!
khaane mein gulab-jamun.. taste chahe jaisa bhi ho ... but atleast diwali ki subah isse achchi baat aur kya ho sakti thi tambiland mein...!!
but we lazy guys... went off to sleep after having such a gr8 lunch...
jab meri need khuli tab ghadi mein 5 baj rahe the..!!! aur wo dono gadhe (as i call them... :-D...) 'ghode' bech ke so rahe the..
i woke 'em up... bhai logon ... safaai karni hai...
bas phir kya tha.. safaii chalu.. and then soon it was pooja time.. so nahake sab puja mein aa gaye.. and it was a gr8 experience to do it in hostel... with saket (mr. pandit ji.... ;-)...) and assistant gp guiding us all the way thru it....
uske baad kya tha .. mithaai... and thn phatake..:-D...
but masti masti mein time kab 9.30 ho gaya.. pata hi nahi chala and now here there was the best GIFT of diwali.....!! no food anywhr.. all messes closed.. even bru, canteen , snacky etc.. sab band.. :-((...
kya kela hai... i thought..
but thanx to our intelligence.. we had maggie in our room (wch we guys had bought for xam time)... so kuch nahi se kuch sahi...
Diwali ke din bhi... maggie khanaa padd rahi hai... ab isse bura aur kya ho sakta hai yaar... but till , can there be more interesting way to celebrate diwali than this.. ??

humm.. the coolest features of yahoo mail is ... "filters"...
well for those who donno bout it... its something that can direct you incoming email to any specific folder..
like if you want an email from "bhuvan_imcool@yahoo.com" to a particular folder named suppose "bhuvan's mails" then you just need to put up a filter with and feed this info.
To use it... simply go to "options" from your yahoo mail page.. and then go to "filters"... ADD a filter and feed the required info.... (you can create a new folder for more convenience in arranging emails...

the bad thing is that you have limited no. of filters in Free version of yahoo mail... you can get more if you get paid version.. but good news is that... you can get as many as 15 filters in free version... (i donn think you'll need more than this...)...

The very first feature is the use of gprs... although an increased no. of cellphone users are now trying their hands on gprs ... but still many r still unaware of this gr8 feature...
The very best FREE stuff gprs sites are wap.getjar.com and wap.tagtag.com (as per my knowledge)...

Dont panic if ur handset is not gprs compatible...
it still can does some amazing works like... if suppose ur car is locked and ur keys are at home...
the thing u need to do is simply call up some1 at ur home from ur mobile on his mobile and ask him to press the unlock button for ur centrally locked car...
and here it is... ur car opens... !!!

suppose if ur cell is stolen... and most possibly u r not able to catch the thief... theres one thing you can do to stop anyone else 's mobile being stolen..
you can tell your "service provider" your cell phone 's IMEI no. and ask them to block it...
as soon as they do it.. no 1 will be able to use that cell phone anymore...
to get the IMEI no. just press " *06# " on your cellphone... Better note down this no. somewhr safe...

One more imp feature of mobile is ... its importance in the case of emergency...
Mobile emergency call no. is " 212" you can call this even if key - lock is active... and at some place whr you may not be g8ing your own network but some other network is available ... then also this will work...

My First year in NITT.....!!

AIEEE result came as much of a surprise to me when i found that i've ended up with sumthing much better than wht i had expected in my worst nightmares..!!
A Gateway Straight into one of the top engg. colleges of the country...!!... An opportunity to study among the breed of some of the best brains of the country...
Although i regretted about not getting into the IITs...

but still... With all this on mah my mind, i took admission in NIT trichy, Mechanical Engg (which soon slided to Elec. n Elex. engg.).... but who knew... what more surprises fate had for me...

Going to the college.... was the very first time i travelled in train for complete 2 days!!
Initially, coming to this tambiland seemed no less than coming to some terrible place in Africa!!... BUT i was mistaking somewhr...
With people speaking tamil, i felt no more than an illiterate...!!
Then was the first day of college... class at 10 a.m. I reached the class 10 mins. before the time (for the first and the last time) jus not to take any risks on the very first day.
but for the very second lecture.. the teacher was absent..!!... 'what a college!!' i thought...
Anyways... it all got over...
A very good thing over here was finding new frends all ranging from "Kashmir to Kanyakumari.."!! in a single hostel... Its a great opportunity to learn about different cultures and diff. ppl...!!

There were ppl coming from the some unknown villages of rajasthan with Awesome AIEEE ranks to ppl frm Metro cities like delhi and bombay...and many Tambis from chennai...

The best experience was to come around with NRIs... The simple way to distinguish them was, a guy speaking every sentence starting with that 'f' word... seemed surprising initially but very soon we all got accustomed. ..

With 4 roomates, you could hardly think of anything like home-sickness...

Infact i was scolded by mom many a times for forgetting to call her, with such a busy schedule in first year... [ hey!! i donn mean studies... ;).. they are hardly a part of daily schedule..!! except for ppl better known as 'muggers'..]

Waking up at 8.15 and then running out to get the attendance for 8.30 class, soon became a normal thing... for guys who woke up in the nite till 4....

And then too... thrown out off the class many a times for coming tooooooooooooo late... (or better called by the teacher as "coming too early for the next lecture.. :D.." )....

And then begging someone inside... to give a proxy... thanks to sunil for giving me so many valuable proxies... and saving me...!!!! [:-D]

The worst part was, being thrown out... after being caught sleeping in the class... :-(...
i still imagine how others were able to keep their eyes open in those CHAAT, and DEADLY lects... !

But still somehow managing all this to maintain the minimum attendance required was the "Main Aim".

Washing clothes and many such things were first timers for many guys here....(Thanx to mom!! for teaching me all these things at the home itself... )...

Apart from all these, were interaction parties specially for first years... where you get to meet, "maals of first year..."... ;)...

But beware if its your b'day.... and be ready to get your ass f****d up... with those Hard bumps as the BEST b'day gift @ midnight.....

Then came the First cycle tests... alongwith "niteouts" (waking up almost the whole nite either to comple ED assignments or to mug up for tests)... to somehow complete.... the vast syallabus... and still ending up with... most of it left untouched... :-S...

Time passed very fast except during xams...

well, I am not going to write here anything bout the results .. :D.. for obvious reasons... ;-)

The end sems brought happiness (about going home on holidays) "magneticallly coupled" with some bad memories of life... about the xams ofcourse...

But, after that, going home for 15 days semester break... was fultoo fun time at home... :-)

The second sem. passed very soon... but with much more fun and enjoyment... and with events like Pragyan (college's tech fest) and NITTFEST (inter - deptt. fest) it is the time when you really get to know the big difference in colllege and school life...!!
And "Section Dhamaka" (inter-section cultz n litz event for 1st yrs.), awakening that competitive spirit in all of us..... I still remember the enthu we all had for preparations and when my dance partner got irritated with my idiotic dance steps... :-D... But still somehow she taught me... and we ended up with a much better performance than i could expect...

And yea... how can i forget the freshers party... and even FTR (final touch of raggin... )... !!

The life after freshy was damn cool... much more than we could think of..

catching seniors for treats and getting fundas from them was gr8...

Then came farewell for Final years... with their senti emotions about college and their 4 years in NITT...

Now "niteout" in octa (Octagon computer centre of coll.) was also added to 'its definition', sitting in AC while orkutting and doing some other stupid things on net... It soon became the "real home" for many guys...

First year life is something i can never forget... never... :-)

Today me and mah 3 more frends went to the temple. When i was parking my cycle one of them said... "why r u locking it? atleast dont lock when v r in temple. Atleast you must have this much trust in god.!!" Then suddenly another guy said, "ofcourse we can trust god, but we cant trust people". as nowadays even keeping your shoes outside is not so safe...

I was jus listening to them and thinking... who's more correct?
ofcourse both have their own point of view... and none of them may be said wrong...
but... if you see it...

The perspective of first one was if you believe in god , you must believe in all things god has made... and humans are one of them.. And those who will come to temple wont do anything cheap like this... atleast in front of god....
coz even if a person is scared of nothing, he is scared of God. (coz wht we r taught since your childhood days.. is to beware of GOD... coz he is the almighty....)

The other guy's perspective (more practical one)....... ofcourse you must believe in god but, god doesnt say to make mistakes by being careless and afterwards blaiming god for the consequences...

But i am confused which view is correct?
Well, I myself dont believe in god (but yea...they both do). And I go to temple just because i find it a very peaceful place (and yea also coz it just makes my mom happy).
But one thing i know is that Belief is something which is made on belief... if you believe someone ... then only he may believe in you...
But, why do we always forg8 the first part...??
why dont we... take the risk to believe others....?? But expect them to....
why do we?

If people can believe in god, whom they have not even seen ever... then why not in someone you are living with?
why?? why cant we believe in humans only?? And if you dont... then why should i believe you?? huummm...!!??

if you can help out.... plss tell me ...? cozzz i still cant find a conclusion...

yahoo has launched its yahoo mail beta, (since a long time now... )...
but many of us are still unaware of it...
Its really awesome... and very user friendly. It makes reading emails much easier and " faster" than our normal yahoo mail.
so to all those who haven't tried out yet... i recommend them to try this once.. n im sure u'll love it.

and one more mostly unknown feature is that... you can have "one more yahoo id" for the same account you are using currently... i.e. like whether you mail me at bhuvan_imcool@yahoo.com or bhuvan.gupta@yahoo.com i will get the mail to the same inbox which is registered as bhuvan_imcool@yahoo.com...

yercaud trip

Yercaud is a beautiful hill station near Salem ,Tamil Nadu(India). It is at an altitude of 1,500 metres (4,920 feet) from mean sea level. The town gets its name from the lake located at its center - in Tamil "Yeri" means "lake" and "Kaadu" means "forest".
Its not so known hill station ... but that is what makes it great for peace lovers. Its not so commercialised and so theres much of naturality and beauty than other hill stations.
we were 6 guys in a desparate need for fun jus after finishing our mid- Exams... we guys started at 4 a.m. (crazy!!) from our college and we reached salem by 10.30....
from salem frequent buses are available to yercaud at interval of every 1 hour... so its not a problem once u reach salem. we started from salem by 11.. after jus 15-20 mins. the real journey started. we were now going uphill in the bus and this is really one of best parts i feel when u go to a hill station... the scenery outside was awesome.. yea but for this you must sit on the left side seats of bus, otherwise you will miss most of this part and end up looking only at the mountain walls.
i took couple of snapshots with the cellphone cam.
Finally we reached the bus stand of yercaud after 1 hr. journey.
Then there is problem is of stay!!
wch hotel to choose...??
there are very few hotels here, yeah but mostly no problem of accomodation as theres not much of rush over here. But still if you dont want to take any risk then better contact some hotel and make the bookings be4 u go.

we hadnt had any luggage wid us apart from two small bags for 6 guys so we were in no need of any hotel xcept jus for relaxation purposes....
so we all took one room for 2 hrs. @rs.150... after a good bargain.
Then finally we started for wht we came here for....

enjoyment ofcourse...!!
initially we started towards the lake, its the nearest place to visit from bus stand. In the way we looked for a good restaurant hotel as all of us were feeling damn hungry.
but one problem is that you cannot find much of north indian food in here. There are jus 2 big hotels and the food is very expensive there.. so its better to take south indian meals if you are pocket concious... ;)...
after meals we were now ready to get set and go...
we went to lake..
There are taxis available (also frm the bus stand) wch will take you to all the places to visit @ rs.450 but you can bargain to bring them down, we hired one for rs.330...
Its better to hire a taxi bcoz most of the places are far away and theres no other ways of transportation. (u cant expect city bus etc. at a hill station ofcourse!!).. Also this guys are good guides so feel relaxed once you get in... :-) ...

we all got into the Omni ...
me n gaurav took the back seat and asked him to open the back door... its the best way to enjoy ur trip if u are a crazy mind (like us :-D) !!!
First we went to Servarayan temple. It is one of the farthest places but also one of the best ones...
it gives u a very sexy look of the green hills around...
Then he took us back to Pagoda point wch is on the other side of lake ...
but wait..!!!
in the way we were stopped by a jam, due to the accident of a truck (look at the picture). People were trying to get the truck up with the help of crane. They had almost got it but then they silly lost the grip and it was ditched back...
we thought to go ahead as we hadnt had much time.
we reached pagoda point.
And tell u, its a damn good place...
one of the sexiest place i've ever been to..!
i liked this one the most...
one more important place is rose garden,
theres so much to roam around and look at the maintained natural beauty.. a good one.

but as soon as we got out of the rose garden, it started raining. wht more you can expect to make your trip better!!
If you come to a place like this and it doesnt rain, then dude!! you've got a bad luck... :-)...(yeah but hope your luck is not even so good to get the rains, enough to spoil the whole trip ... ;).. lols..).

Then, you'll be taken to some small but good places like ladies seat, children's seat and gents seat... (they guys cudnt find any better names to this places so kept those sick names ... as it has nothing to do with whether u r a male or female !.. they are just places to get a good sight of beautiful greeny hills...)...

but yeah.... rain washed away our plans of boating in the lake... :-(...
Then it was already 6.30 pm and most of the guys wanted to watch the new released hindi movie in salem [as we dont get to watch it in trichy theatres, all playing tamil versions.. :-( ].
so we caught a bus back to salem.
In salem 4 of us(sunil, nikunj , avinash n gaurav) went for the latest released movie. Whereas me n abhishek decided to come back to college as i was really feeling drowsy with no sleep for almost last 30 hrs and still to complete mah practical records for submission the next day... :-(....
we both had a good dinner there, in a restaurant.
And then started our way back to "The most weird place on The Planet, our college... NITT "... :-D...
It was a memorable trip and all of us enjoyed it to the max.... :-)..
